Yoga Guide

Why practice yoga

Yoga combines physical postures, breath control, and mindfulness to improve flexibility, strength, balance, and mental clarity. Regular practice supports better posture, reduces stress, enhances body awareness, and can contribute to overall well-being.

Getting started

  • Set a comfortable space: warm, clean, and free of distractions.
  • Choose a quiet, non-slip surface and wear comfortable clothing.
  • Begin with 5 minutes of deep, steady breathing to center the mind.
  • Listen to your body: never push into pain; respect your limits and gradually increase intensity.

Essential poses

  • Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand tall with feet together, distribute weight evenly, engage the legs, lengthen the spine, and soften the shoulders.
  • Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): Hands and feet on the floor, hips lifted, spine long; press evenly through all fingers.
  • Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): Front knee bent, back leg straight, arms extended parallel to the floor; gaze over the front hand.
  • Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana): Sit with soles of the feet together, knees open wide; gently hinge forward to stretch the inner thighs.
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana): Knees wide or together, forehead to the mat; arms extended forward or resting by the body for a calming stretch.

Breathwork basics

  • Ujjayi breath: Slight constriction at the back of the throat, steady inhalation and exhalation through the nose.
  • Equal breathing (Sama Vritti): Inhale for a count, exhale for the same count; maintain a relaxed jaw and shoulders.
  • Uplift and release: Inhale to lengthen the spine, exhale to soften areas of tension (jaw, shoulders, hips).

Sample 20-minute routine

  • 2 minutes: Child’s Pose and gentle neck stretches
  • 3 minutes: Cat-Cow flow to warm the spine
  • 4 minutes: Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) β€” 4 rounds at a comfortable pace
  • 3 minutes: Standing poses sequence (Mountain, Warrior II, Side Angle)
  • 3 minutes: Seated forward fold (Paschimottanasana) with optional bend of the knees
  • 3 minutes: Supine twists and final relaxation (Shavasana)
  • 2 minutes: Gentle breathing to finish

Safety and practice tips

  • Prioritize alignment over depth; use props like blocks or straps if needed.
  • Hydrate before and after practice; avoid eating a heavy meal immediately beforehand.
  • If you have a medical condition or injury, consult a healthcare professional before starting a new routine.
  • Modify or skip any pose that causes discomfort; progress gradually over weeks and months.

Creating a sustainable routine

  • Schedule short, daily sessions to build consistency.
  • Mix dynamic flow days with slower, restorative sessions.
  • Track progress: note feelings of energy, mobility, and mood after practice.
  • Pair yoga with complementary activities like walking or gentle cardio for balanced wellness.
