Yoga at the Beach

Yoga Guide

  • A balanced approach to flexibility, strength, and mindfulness that fits into daily life.

Why practice yoga

  • Improves mobility and posture
  • Builds core strength and endurance
  • Encourages calm focus and stress reduction
  • Supports better balance and body awareness

Getting started

  • Set a comfortable space with enough room to stretch
  • Wear breathable, flexible clothing
  • Use a yoga mat for grip and cushioning
  • Start slowly, focusing on form rather than depth of stretch

Basic sequence (gentle for beginners)

  1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
    • Stand tall with feet together or hip-width apart, shoulders relaxed, gaze forward. Breathe naturally for 5 breaths.
  2. Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
    • Hinge at the hips, let the head and arms hang. Bend knees slightly if needed. 5 breaths.
  3. Halfway Lift (Ardha Uttanasana)
    • Flatten the back, fingertips on the shins or floor. Look forward. 5 breaths.
  4. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
    • Hands shoulder-width apart, feet hip-width apart, hips lifted. Hold for 5–7 breaths.
  5. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana)
    • Step one foot forward, knee above ankle, back knee down. Open the hip. 4–6 breaths each side.
  6. Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)
    • Front knee over ankle, arms parallel to floor, gaze over front hand. Hold for 5 breaths each side.
  7. Child’s Pose (Balasana)
    • Knees wide or together, forehead to mat, arms extended or alongside the body. Rest for 1–2 minutes.

Safety and alignment

  • Listen to your body; ease off if you feel sharp pain
  • Keep the neck in a neutral position during inversions or bends
  • Use a strap or block if you cannot reach the floor; props help maintain alignment
  • Stay hydrated and avoid practicing on a full stomach

Props that help

  • Yoga mat for grip and cushioning
  • Yoga strap for increasing reach
  • Yoga blocks to bring the floor closer when needed
  • Blanket for knee support or warmth

Sample 20-minute beginner routine

  • 2 minutes: Gentle warm-up (neck rolls, shoulder circles, ankle rotations)
  • 3 minutes: Sun Salutation A sequence (modified)
  • 4 minutes: Standing poses (Warrior II, Extended Side Angle)
  • 3 minutes: Balance poses (Tree Pose or Half Moon with support)
  • 3 minutes: Seated stretches (Seated Forward Fold, Bound Angle)
  • 3 minutes: Relaxation (Corpse Pose with 5–10 deep breaths)

Tips for progress

  • Practice 3–4 times per week to build consistency
  • Focus on breath: inhaling and exhaling through the nose
  • Progress gradually, increasing hold times by 1–2 breaths every week
  • Keep a simple journal of poses you enjoy and any adjustments needed

Common beginner mistakes (and fixes)

  • Forcing deep stretches: back off and use support
  • Holding the breath: breathe steadily with each movement
  • Skipping warm-up: start with gentle mobility before intense poses
  • Ignoring alignment cues: use props or a mirror to maintain form

Next steps

  • Try a short, guided class or video session to reinforce technique
  • Schedule regular practice times to build habit
  • Consider a beginner-friendly class to receive live feedback
