Getting Started
- Set a gentle space: comfortable temperature, quiet, and a mat or soft surface.
- Choose a few minutes daily: consistency beats intensity for beginners.
- Focus on breath: inhale through the nose, exhale through the nose or mouth as needed.
- Listen to your body: avoid sharp pain, respect limits, and modify poses as necessary.
Core Poses for Beginners
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana): Stand tall, feet together, shoulders relaxed, wrists by sides. Gentle micro-bend in the knees, lengthen the spine, and steady the breath.
- Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana): Hands and feet hips-width apart, hips lifted, spine long. Press evenly through palms and heels toward the floor.
- Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): Feet wide, one foot forward, bend knee over ankle, arms extended parallel to the floor. Gaze over the front hand.
- Tree Pose (Vrikshasana): Shift weight to one leg, place the sole of the other foot on the inner thigh or calf (avoid the knee). Hands in prayer at chest or overhead.
- Childβs Pose (Balasana): Knees wide or together, big toes touch, sit back onto heels and extend arms forward. Rest and breathe deeply.
- Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana): Sit with legs extended, hinge at the hips, fold toward the legs, keep spine long.
Breathing Practices
- Ujjayi Breath: Slight constriction at the back of the throat, steady audible inhale and exhale through the nose.
- Abdominal Breath ( diaphragmatic breathing): Inhale to expand the abdomen, exhale slowly to relax the body.
- Equal Breath: Inhale and exhale for the same duration, fostering balance and focus.
Safety and Modifications
- Warm up with gentle movements before deeper stretches.
- Use a strap or bolster to ease into poses with limited mobility.
- Avoid holding breath; maintain smooth, steady breathing.
- Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness, or discomfort in joints.
