Getting Started

- Gear: a non-slip mat, comfortable clothing, and water
- Schedule: aim for 3β4 sessions per week, even 15β20 minutes is beneficial
- Warm-up: begin with gentle movements to wake up the joints
Basic Poses (with cues)
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
- Stand tall with feet together or hip-width apart, distribute weight evenly, lift the chest, and relax the shoulders. Breathe deeply through the nose.
- Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
- Hands shoulder-width apart, feet hip-width apart, hips lifted, spine long. Press firm into the hands, soften the neck, and engage the legs.
- Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)
- Step one foot back, bend the front knee, arms parallel to the floor, gaze over the front hand. Keep the front knee aligned with the ankle.
- Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
- Shift weight onto one leg, place the opposite foot on the inner calf or thigh (avoid the knee), hands at prayer position or overhead. Find a focal point to balance.
- Childβs Pose (Balasana)
- Knees wide or together, big toes touch, hips back toward heels, forehead to the mat, arms extended or relaxed by the sides. Breathe gently.

Breathing Techniques
- Diaphragmatic breathing: inhale deeply through the nose, allowing the abdomen to rise; exhale slowly and completely
- Ujjayi breath (ocean breath): softly constrict the back of the throat while breathing through the nose to create a steady, audible sound
- Breathing rhythm: match the breath to movement in a smooth, unforced flow
Safety and Modifications
- Listen to your body: avoid sharp pain, honor any injuries, and back off as needed
- Use props: blocks, straps, or a chair to support balance and alignment
- Gradual progression: increase duration and depth gradually; consistency trumps intensity
Quick Start Tips
- Set a consistent time slot for practice to build habit
- Focus on form first; depth can come with time
- Hydrate after practice and allow for a short cool-down period
