Yoga Guide
A practical, beach-friendly sequence to start or deepen a yoga practice. Focus on steady breath, mindful movement, and listening to your body. Adapt poses to your comfort level and the sand beneath you.
Warm-up and Breath
- Sit or stand comfortably. Inhale deeply through the nose, exhale fully through the mouth. Repeat for 1–2 minutes to center your mind.
- Gentle neck and shoulder circles: slowly roll the shoulders up, back, and down; gently tilt the head side to side to release tension.
- Cat-Cow (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana) on a towel or mat substitute: synchronize movement with breath to loosen the spine.
Grounding and Alignment
- Mountain Pose (Tadasana): stand tall, feet together or hip-width apart, weight even, crown of the head lifting. Align hips, ribs, and shoulders.
- Forward Bend (Uttanasana): hinge at the hips, knees soft, spine lengthening as you fold over legs. Acknowledge the stretch in the hamstrings.
- Chair Pose (Utkatasana): bend knees, hips back, arms reaching upward. Lift the chest while keeping the core engaged.
- Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II): step wide, front knee bent, back leg strong, arms extended parallel to the ground. Gaze over the front fingers.
- Tree Pose (Vrksasana): shift weight to one leg, place the sole of the opposite foot at the ankle, shin, or thigh (avoid the knee). Bring hands to prayer at the heart or raise overhead.
Beach-Friendly Flow (10–15 minutes)
- Begin in Mountain Pose. Inhale to raise arms overhead; exhale to fold forward.
- Inhale to a Half Lift, exhale to a Low Lunge (each side) with the back knee lowered.
- From Low Lunge, rise to Warrior II on the same side. Hold for a few breaths, then cartwheel hands to frame the front foot and step back to Plank, then lowering into Chaturanga or a gentle knee-chest-head variation.
- Return to Downward-Facing Dog for a breath or two, then step the front foot to repeat the flow on the other side.
- Finish with a wide triangle pose (Trikonasana) if comfortable, then return to Mountain Pose for a few breaths.
Safety and Tips
- Practice on stable, even ground; if the sand shifts, widen your stance for balance.
- Hydrate before and after; wear sunscreen to protect skin during sun exposure.
- Listen to your body: ease back or skip a pose if there is any discomfort or pain.
- Use a towel or mat for grip and comfort on the sand.
Cool Down and Relaxation
- Seated forward bend (Paschimottanasana) or gentle supine twists to release the spine.
- Legs up the wall variation is great if available; otherwise lie flat with arms at the sides, eyes closed, and take slow, even breaths.
- Savasana (Corpse Pose) for 3–5 minutes to absorb the practice and cultivate relaxation.
