Lighting and mood

  • Use soft, diffused light to minimize harsh shadows around the eyes and cheekbones.
  • Position the subject so light wraps gently from the side, adding dimension without flattening features.
  • For a brighter, more energetic look, experiment with front or slightly front-side illumination.

Posing and expression

  • Encourage a relaxed posture with a slight tilt of the head and a gentle smile or thoughtful gaze.
  • Direct attention to the eyes; a small, intentional blink or a micro-smile can add life.
  • Avoid forced expressions by giving the subject simple prompts and pausing for authentic moments.

Framing and composition

  • Frame the face with a comfortable amount of space above the head and around the sides to prevent a cramped crop.
  • Fill the frame with the eyes one-third of the way down from the top for a natural emphasis.
  • Consider a shallow depth of field to isolate the face and blur distracting backgrounds.

Lens and settings
