SHAPES FLASHCARD

SHAPES FLASHCARD

A concise reference to common shapes, highlighting their basic characteristics and everyday examples.

  • Circle — sides, corners. A perfectly round shape; example: coin.
Key property: all points are equidistant from the center.
  • Triangle — 3 sides, 3 corners. Examples: slice of pizza, road sign.
Variant to note: equilateral (all sides and angles equal).
  • Square — 4 equal sides, 4 right angles. Example: chessboard square.
Key property: opposite sides are parallel; all angles are 90 degrees.
  • Rectangle — 4 sides, 4 corners; opposite sides are equal and parallel. Example: standard book page.
Key property: angles are all 90 degrees; length and width may differ.
  • Pentagon — 5 sides, 5 corners. Example: a typical home plate in baseball.
Key property: interior angles sum to 540 degrees.
  • Hexagon — 6 sides, 6 corners. Example: honeycomb cell.
Key property: can tessellate with a regular tiling pattern.
  • Oval (Ellipse) — sides in the strict sense, corners. Example: ellipse-shaped running track.
Key property: elongated circle; symmetry along two axes.

Tips for quick recognition:

  • Count sides to identify polygons.
  • Look for right angles to spot squares and rectangles.
  • Note symmetry patterns to distinguish circles, ovals, and polygons.
