MATCH THE SHAPES

Aim

• Develop shape recognition and matching skills through guided practice and hands-on activities.

Materials

• A set of shape cards (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon) in various colors
• A blank worksheet for drawing and labeling shapes
• A small timer (optional)
• Shape mats or a flat surface to arrange cards

Instructions

1. Introduce the shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon. Review attributes (sides, corners, symmetry).
2. Display a reference shape and ask learners to find a matching card from the set.
3. Encourage describing features: “The circle has no corners,” “The square has four equal sides.”
4. Progress to a two-step task: find a match, then place it on the corresponding shape mat.
5. Rotate through several rounds to build speed and accuracy.

Activity 1: Guided Matching

• Pair learners and give each pair a mixed pile of shape cards.
• One student selects a target shape while the other races to find a correct match.
• Discuss near-miss examples (e.g., mistaking a rectangle for a square) to reinforce distinctions.

Activity 2: Independent Practice

• Provide a worksheet with outlined shapes and blank spaces.
• Students draw or place shapes into the correct outlines and label them.

Activity 3: Challenge Round

• Use a timer to create a quick-fire round.
• Call out a shape, and learners must quickly pick and place the matching card.

Differentiation

• For beginners: use only two shapes at a time and add verbal prompts.
• For advanced learners: introduce shapes with different sizes and rotations; include non-examples to sharpen discernment.
